Abstract This article examines the meaning of Western music performances in interwar Shanghai through theoretical framework performativity that originated John Austin's speech act and Judith Butler's notion identity as performed. The early concerts Municipal Orchestra (SMO), I suggest, were an assertion settler sovereignty a treaty port such Shanghai.
